what is to the fairest?🍏

To the Fairest is a musical theatre adaptation of the Greek myth leading up to the legendary Trojan War, encompassing the story of the Golden Apple of Discord.

It was originally drafted, orchestrated, and performed at the tail end of 2022 in just about 3 days’ time. From there, that draft was heavily edited and revised for a festival run in New York City the following December. The FOLLOWING year, it was performed as a cabaret/concert experience at the prestigious 54 Below— also in NYC.

Now, not only does it exist as a one-act and have further development as a full length piece in its future, but we’ve adapted our 2023 festival script to be more school-age appropriate and digestible for younger audiences.

The TYA, or, Theatre for Young Audiences, edition of our show premiered in December of 2024 at Bristol Arts and Innovation Magnet School in Bristol, CT, USA (seen in header video above).

who wrote this show?

A team of 11 young artists came together to write this show. Those artists were, originally (in alphabetical order by last): Raúl Calderón, Dylan Cote, C Descoutures, Brighton Valor Horan, Kat Lacombe, Miles Messier, Alex Mika, Amanda Lee Morrill, Nyx Nelson, David VanDyke, and Oksana Veres.

The revisions were primarily handled by original book and music supervisors, Brighton Valor Horan and Miles Messier, respectively, though feedback from old fans and outsiders alike was welcomed in the processes.

WHAT AUDIENCE IS THIS SHOW BEST FOR?

Our premiere audience was composed of about 300 middle school students, who really seemed engaged with the material. We’d recommend this particular version of the show for middle and high school-aged folks!

As far as comprehension of material goes, any Percy Jackson fan will recognize characters and themes pretty quickly— To the Fairest also works as a great tie-in piece for a Greek myth or literature unit in ELA or Theatre/Drama studies.
